The goal of our group "Lebendige Geschichte 1939-49"
(Living History 1939-49) is the vital examination of the Second World War
and the postwar period in Germany. We work together in close cooperation
with "The Netherlands 1940-1945" (Dutch Study- and Living History Group).

Living History?
Living History is the attempt to recreate the
living experience of historical epochs. It has the goal of making the chosen
time-span understandable through one’s own dedicated re-creation, and making
the same era comprehensible to others by using clear techniques obvious
to everyone. In this manner, the concept of Living History offers many
and diverse opportunities for comprehensive learning experiences and newly
realized ways of imagining the past. |

| Why 1939-1949?
World War II was one of the most decisive events
of the Twentieth Century. The war unleashed by Germany had global consequences
that largely shaped our society today.
The war revealed in many shocking ways what
actions people were capable of, and how immeasurable human suffering could
be caused by a conflict waged within the age of weapons of mass destruction. |

This war reduced much of Europe to piles of
rubble and forced a complete rebuilding in its wake, but the war also offered
the chance to learn from wartime experiences.
Germany above all had to master the difficult
challenge of using its “Zero Hour” of total defeat as a positive start
to a New Beginning, in which it also had to learn how to cope with the
inherited legacy of its National Socialist past. |

Although this time period was so important
for the current essence and conception of our society, it has been so suppressed
that even today it remains a taboo subject in many areas, which only gradually
becomes evident. In our opinion, a comprehensible and critical examination
of this era is necessary because historical disinterest, as well as superficial
knowledge or mistaken information, creates an ideal breeding ground for
extreme rightwing and antidemocratic ideas.
